ABOUT THE Historic Boston Then Silk SCARF
The city of Boston is built on landfill. The silk scarf overlays five of the historical maps on the original Shawmut peninsula that show how it developed from 800 acres with five hills connected by a neck to the land to the west into a flattened city of 89 square miles it is today. The process took over a century. The scarf shows how the landfill progressed as the city developed.

ABOUT THE Boston Map Insert
The five maps are snapshots of downtown Boston at half century intervals as it ‘gained ground’. These maps illustrates the transformation of the original Shawmut Peninsula into the modern city of Boston. Boston’s “Landmaking” unfolded over more than a century. Early projects leveled the surrounding hills to fill Mill Pond. Once that material was exhausted, workers hauled in soil from four of the remaining five hills and even used refuse as landfill before moving further away. These efforts steadily created new land to accommodate a growing population. Over time, Boston’s footprint expanded from roughly 800 acres to nearly 5,000, reshaping the coastline entirely. Each map captures a moment in this long process, with the final one depicting the city’s present-day form. This map will accompany the Boston Silk Scarf and Tote Bags.
